was thinking of doing six rows total one row in each of the rainbow colors then maybe finish the edge with a slip stich in black yarn. makeingn a long scarf from it.

Yes, this will work with both half double crochet and double crochet. If you want to go farther, you can crochet additional rows. Some people make long detailed scarves out of this basic technique.

thanks for replying. I think I am going to try top make a couple long ones that are wider to use as scarves . Then give them away as presents.

You can add more rows to make it wider. It may not be necessary to increase on every stitch for the consecutive rows.

can one add another row or two to this to make it wider and say use it for a scarf if it were long enough? And if so would one have to add 3 crochet stitches to each stitch in the previous row for each row you expand with?

Looks like you answered your own question. I have seen the curly cues on hair clips for little girls. Tied on shoes. I have two other tutorials where the curly cue is used to make a candy cane and a wreath ornament.

With the white it reminds me of an icicle ornament on a christmas tree! That would be fun. Start with sc, to hdc, to dc, to tr add a ribbon at the top and there ya go!
