This is the video on increasing so that may be why it looks the same. I do have a round shell cap that uses increases along with the basic shell. This just shows the technique for increasing. Each person may need to do a modification for the pattern stitch they are working on. There will be many ways that a person may increase a shell for a round or a row. If you are able to make it work, then it is another way to achieve your goal of increasing.

whenever you increase it looks like you are doing the same thing as before, what am i missing? do you have a separate video on increasing?

Hi Teresa: Just wondering. I am working on a blanket with the shell stitch and want to use other stitches, such as the puff and treble. How do I make a row that is straight after doing the shell stitch…in other words, the shell stitch has a rounded top…I need to get that rounded top in a straight row so I can do the other stitches…having a hard time with that

The example in the video is for making a swatch wider each time you add increases. You would need to determine how many increases you need in your neck warmer. What you are looking for is a pattern. This peticular video is a learning tutorial. If you wanted to make something wider, I would recommend that you increase every other stitch. You may have to rip until you determine your width of increases.

Dear Teresa,
thank you for you quick response. However I want to increase to make my swatch broader as I go along. I want to make a neckwarmer that should increase, like the base part of a triangle. The increase in the video is for adding more volume and not making the piece broader. Do you have any good tips for broadening your piece as you go along. Best regards Emma from Sweden

It is not necessary to evenly distribute increases. They could be used for the bust of a sweater so they will be limited to one area. They could be used for shoulders. Even with the skirt of a dress, they might be used every few stitches. Since you mentioned that you are a beginner, I would suggest practicing with the shell stitch. Once you get an understanding of basic crochet, increases will make more sense.

You can make an increase in any shell that you would like. You can do it every other shell or every three or four shells. This is showing how to do it yourself without a pattern telling you how to do it. With the next row you just continue makiing shells. The video shows how to do the following row after the increase. Timecode 2:15 shows the following row.

I don’t understand. Can I make the increase in any shell, or do I need to balance it out with a second one. I.e should I make 2 increases on every row? Also, I don’t understand what to do in the increase when working over it on the following row. Sorry for being a beginner./Emma from Sweden

This tutorial is showing how to increase. It is not a pattern. Once you understand increases, you can add as many increases as you need. It is not necessary to increase at the beginning of a round.

I have been watching your great tutorials, learning how to crochet.I’ve learned to do the shell stitch but I’m having a difficult time grasping the shell stitch increase. Do you start the increasing on the row, starting with 3 DC, or the row starting with CH3+2 DC? Does it make any difference. Could you perhaps write down the pattern for a whole row, cause I’m uncertain as to when to start the increase, and also how many increases to make in a row.Greetings from Sweden.

Ah, It does make it less confusing. thanks so much ^^

If you watch at timecode 1:36, you will see the chain 3, turn and 2 DC in the same stitch. For this pattern it is half of a shell. I hope that makes it less confusing.

What you do is crochet the next stitches in the same stitch, on the edge of where you just turned. I will look at the time code to see where this is done.
